The West-End Smash transfers across the Pond

Shakespeare's work has been universally embraced as one of the highest forms of literary art and his sonnets and plays have even shaped the English language as we know it. It is delightfully wicked then that Shakespeare in Love, the exciting new West End transfer, opens with the bard in the throes of writer's block, struggling to finish his next great play Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter...

This brand new production first opened at London's Noel Coward Theatre in July 2014, ending its critically acclaimed run in April 2015. Adapted by the Tony-winning English playwright and screenwriter Lee Hall (the man behind the Billy Elliot movie), the dramedy is based on the seven-time Academy Award-winning film of the same name. It's set to be the jewel in the crown of Ontario's 2016 Stratford Festival and there are rumours of a Broadway premiere on the horizon. Next stop, The Great White Way!

What is Shakespeare in Love About?

The course of true love never did run smooth, not even for the genius that penned those fateful words... Shakespeare must shake his writer's block in order to survive. The struggling poet has not yet hit the level of fame of his close friend, the playwright Christopher Marlowe, and is searching for a muse. Although he hasn't finished writing his latest play, he starts casting anyway, only for a muse to fall right in his lap! Her name is Viola De Lesseps, a noblewoman and ardent Shakespeare fan. Upon first meeting, Viola is disguised as a man to audition for a role in Romeo and Ethel the Pirate's Daughter, but the dashing young writer sees through this and the pair begin one of the greatest love stories ever told.
